Pediatric Penile Perception Score in assessment of penile appearance after hypospadias surgery

- Objective To evaluate the role of Pediatric Penile Perception Score( PPPS ) in assessment of penile appearance after hypospadias surgery. Methods The clinical data from patients, who were treated with TIP urethroplasty by the same urologist, were collected from January 2014 to December 2016 in our hospital. All the parents of boys were interviewed by a urologist in our department with Pediatric Penile Perception Score, as well as other experienced urologists. Results In our study, 74 patients, age from 6 to 144 months (mean 36 months), underwent urethroplasty with mean follow-up of 12 months (1～117 months). The PPPS allowed urologists and parents to assess cosmetic result after hypospadias surgery. The data showed that parents’ assessment of the cosmetic outcome was worse than urologists’ assessment (P < 0.0001). However, no significant difference was found between parents’ assessment of urethroplasty and circumcision (P > 0.05). Conclusions The Pediatric Penile Perception Score is a reliable instrument to assess cosmetic outcome after hypospadias repair, urologists’ assessment of the cosmetic outcome was better than parents’.
