- Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV),also known as human herpes virus-5 (HHV-5),plays an important role in multiple pediatric liver diseases.HCMV infection in children is typically asymptomatic or presents with mild symptoms,including slight hepatomegaly and elevated transaminase levels.Biliary atresia (BA) is one of the most common cholestatic liver diseases in infants.A growing number of studies suggest that HCMV infection may be one of the triggers for BA; however,the association between HCMV and BA and its specific pathogenic role and mechanisms remain unclear.This review summarizes the possible pathogenic mechanisms of HCMV in the development of BA,diagnosis and therapeutic approaches,and its potential impact on prognosis,aiming to provide new information and perspectives for future BA research.
