Abstract:
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a major cause of intestinal failure in children.And nutritional management has been a core prognostic factor.The goal of treatment is to improve intestinal function and promote intestinal adaptation.SBS with a remaining small intestine length of <25 cm or <10% of expected length for age is termed as ultra-short bowel syndrome.Nutritional support for this condition is more challenging.This review focused upon the diagnosis,treatment and nutritional support experience of a full-term child with ultra-short bowel syndrome due to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).Postoperatively,merely 20 cm of small intestine remained without an ileocecal valve.Through various nutritional support strategies,including early initiation of enteral nutrition,gastrostomy feeding,cyclical parenteral nutrition,reasonable addition of complementary foods on a low-oxalate principle,full oral feeding and excellent quality-of-life were ultimately achieved.Thus successful treatment of children with ultra-short bowel syndrome requires a personalized nutritional support protocol based upon guidelines.
