- Objective To analyze the changes of nerve function associated with childhood tethered cord syndrome (TCS) using electromyogram (EMG) technology. Methods The clinical and EMG datum of 98 cases with TCS were analyzed retrospectively. The patiens were divided into two groups (no more than 6 months and more than 6 months) based on age. The total patients underwent the examinations of motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV), sensory nerve conduction velocity (SCV), F wave (Fw), H reflex (Hr) and core needle electromyography (EMG) preoperatively. The abnormality rates and differences among testing items or age groups were evaluated. Results The abnormality rates of MCV (60.20%) was higher than that of SCV (8.16%) (x2 = 29.4918,P < 0.01). There was not significant difference among MCV, Hr, Fw and EMG (x2 = 0.2842,P > 0.05). The abnormal pattern characterized with low volatility, and normal conduction velocity and incubation indicated nerve root lesion and axonal degeneration. The higher abnormality rate occurred in age group with more than 6 months (x2 = 8.4633,P < 0.01). This result showed that abnormality rate increased with the advance of age and extension of disease course. Conclusions The electromyography plays an important role in assessing the extent and severity of disease, predicting prognosis, and guiding rehabilitation in patients with TCS.
